WHEN & WHERE:

  • My wife and I (N8QM) are hosting an October Meet & Greet for the Weekday Morning Roundtable Net of Washtenaw’s WD8DUY repeater. Please let our usual net controller (Jim, W8STX) know if you’d like to attend. You can also let him know whether you’re available for the rain date.
  • RSVP updates are being accepted through probably about Friday night but RSVP is not a requirement. It helps us.
  • 10626 Coopersfield Rd. Chelsea, Michigan 48118
  • Weather permitting
    • October 10, 2026
    • From 4 pm to 7pm
  • Rain date
    • October 17
    • From 4 pm to 7pm

Location

10626 Coopersfield Rd. Chelsea, Michigan 48118

Information

We’ll have a bonfire like the similar event we hosted several years ago, along with catered sandwiches and Diet Coke. I invite guests to bring their own favorite 2-liter soft drinks to share with the group (Diet Coke is covered).

Because the group is largely unknown to each other except by radio communications, I respectfully request that no alcohol or beer be brought.

Bug Control: We have a monthly contract to spray the entire property to reduce bugs. Nevertheless, please feel free to bring your own bug spray.

Subway sandwich boxes are only one part of the preparations. Howard (AD8IM) said he will bring venison steaks, cook them, and distribute them via the fireside table. We will have a variety of munchies on the fireside table as well as an assortment of condiments and dinnerware.

The ones passing on food can still take the meat out of the sandwiches. The key takeaway is that whatever numbers I order from Subway, it will be overkill based on what I know. I am not doing exact matching by any means. So, let us say that 20 show up and that I ordered only 15 boxes. I can still send out to Jett’s Pizza in Chelsea for more eats. While my address is out in the Boon Docks, we do have public electricity and Jetts Pizza. And by the way, Sandie and I use Keto bread at our house as well.

I want to make sure everyone understands that an RSVP is NOT required, but it is VERY helpful. I am fairly certain that a call to Subway, even Friday evening, to add sandwich boxes will not be rejected. At the time of this writing, I am tentatively planning to order 20 boxes when I call Subway, probably this (Wednesday) evening.

I also want to make doubly sure that wives, children, and grandchildren are warmly welcomed. We have large animals they can interact with (facilitated by my Sandie), making it a day they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Special Needs

  • Disabled attendees driving to 10626 Coopersfield Rd. need not worry about getting to the campsite.
  • Our Kawasaki Mule has bench seats in the front and back (not to mention a carry box behind that), so, in theory, it seats up to 6, including the driver.
  • It would be foolish for us to drive the Mule much more than 5 mph, since our trails are designed for horse driving, not adventure.
  • The Mule will be making trips (as often as needed) between the campfire site and the property driveway.
  • Also, Howard (AD8IM) will be taking his motorcycle to the fireside. He could possibly also offer rides (…just be’n funny)
  • Seating:
    • We have a considerable number of outdoor lawn chairs that will be at the fireside.
    • What we have may not be enough (given unknown actual attendance).
    • Feel free to bring your own outdoor chair that folds and is easily carried.

For the physically challenged:

  • If you can get to 10626 Coopersfield Rd. in Chelsea, we can therefore get you to the campfire site where we will be hosting the event back in the bug-free woods.
  • The large animals instinctively know who is physically challenged. They really do!

Volunteers:

  • Howard (AD8IM)
    • Is bringing some venison steaks and hot dogs which he will cook on the bonfire.
    • He is bringing his supplies on his motor bike which I am having him ride to the campsite.
  • If you have a special dish you would like to bring, please let me know so that I can list it here for others to see.

Who is Invited:

  • Amateurs frequenting the W8DUI Weekday Roundtable Net and their families and grandchildren.
  • Amateur Radio wannabes (please email [email protected] saying you are a wannabe)

Eats

  • I am catering the event using my local Chelsea Subway
  • It will be sandwich boxes with different flavors and bread styles. I will have more details once I place the order with Subway.
  • I will be providing Diet Coke and Coca-Cola drinks
  • Guests are invited to bring their favorite 2-liter soft drinks

Why should I bring my kids and grandkids?

This is my Sandie before she retired from the U.
  • We have large animals the children and grandchildren can get up close to. This will be mainly to brush them and love on them.
  • Sandie will be facilitating interactions with the large animals for safety.
